A recent article in The Wall Street Journal predicts that the next wave of remote work is upon us. In this article, Konrad Putzier says that companies are responding to lingering labour shortages and rising wages by sending jobs overseas. According to him, U.S. senior managers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta said they were moving more jobs abroad as a result of remote work. Furthermore, companies that facilitate international hires on a remote basis also report a surge in remote work since 2019.
To illustrate his point, he says that in a lightbulb moment a certain well-known employer recognised that instead of having the employee work in another state, he outsourced her job to India, where his organisation is saving around 40% in labor costs. Companies are learning that employees can be productive from afar, thanks to remote-working technology. This opens up a whole new world of talent pools for employers and the opportunity to access better-skilled workers at a substantially reduced cost.
He adds: 'Now companies are responding to lingering labor shortages and rising wages by sending jobs overseas, according to labor consultants. In August, 7.3% of U.S. senior managers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta said they were moving more jobs abroad as a result of remote work.'
At OUTprof, we too have experienced the growing trend toward companies extending their search for talent to offshore countries where they know that they can access talent at substantially reduced prices. South African workers are highly regarded for their work-ethic, good service orientation, and their 'can-do' attitudes. For this reason, and given that South Africa approximates their time zones, more and more European companies are looking to employ Saffas on their teams.
Fortunately, the mechanisms are in place to facilitate these deployments and to contract and pay these workers in a fully compliant manner.
Now is the time for professionals to seek remote employment abroad. This is a great way of getting international experience without having to incur the emotional and financial cost of relocation.
